As a twenty-something and card-carrying member of the Recession Generation, I’ve kind of heard it all. We’re lazy. We’re not making progress in our careers. We were coddled growing up. There are no jobs for us. Our future is bleak. People have calculated just how much we’ll lose on average in earnings from graduating when we did.
Really? Please. We’re just as awesome as every generation that came before us – and we have the internet. Massive bonus (…if a little bit of a time drain). We can watch and learn from what everyone around us has done. And when I say this, I mean that I can think of, off the top of my head, over twenty friends of all ages and places in their careers who have rocked it in the corporate world and then gone on to start rocking it in their own businesses. People are carving out more and more time for their priorities, spending more time outdoors, or getting fit, or with their families. And it doesn’t stop there – writing, photography, marketing, painting, legal consulting… These people are awesome, and they’re all around.
The truth is, success these days is probably not going to look like it did in the past. The world is changing. We aren’t going to have an easy path up the corporate ladder. We don’t have nice pensions waiting for us. Trust me, I really tried to like my corporate job. It hurt to scrabble like crazy…until I realized it wasn’t even my dream. For some people, it is the dream – for a while. Then they find a new one. So, while our success is probably not going to look like it did in other generations…it’s going to be okay.
I’m Moira. I’m one of the ones who jumped ship from a plan that wasn’t working, and I want to help you live the dream, too.
